1964 classmate Shirley (Bell) MacDonald passed away on June 7th, 2014.  We send our condolences to family and friends.  This is indeed a sad time.

Shirley will always be an integal part of the lives of those who knew her and cared about her ...as long as we live.

I find Shirley's passing very shocking. I haven't been in touch at all; so I don't know the circumstances. As far as I know, she could have been unwell for some time. I guess I still don't think of ourselves as old; and it's just hard to see any of our number slipping away on us. I have already been shocked to see some of the ones who have left us already.

Yes, I certainly send my condolences to Shirley's family.

H. F. (Herb) Legg (1964)

You're not alone, Phillip.

News of the loss of various classmates is a jolt, especially now.  For some reason I still mind's-eye our colleagues - and myself - as being as we were in our teens physically and mentally.  And it truly IS a shock to read of our contemporaries' deaths.

They all seem far, far, too soon......ALL.....those who departed  before '64 and those who are checking out now; same bittersweet vibes, same mental head snap.

I much preferred the days when the only obits I recognized were those of movie stars or sports figures, once in a while a politician, sometimes a former neighbor.

Take heart that at least we won't have to read our own - even if we wrote it beforehand.

hfl  wink.

Shirley will be missed in September, yes Herb and Philip as you are saying it is shocking the number of people that have passed.

I have an April, 27, 1964 Hi-Lites. On the front page is Shirley Bell, along with 4 others from PCSS who were part of the "Quiz Team" that was awarded the EK Teachers' Federation Academic Trophy...held in Lethbridge. I am sending it to Pat. This was a pretty amazing newspaper....sure covered all the bases....some pretty amusing inserts...lol.  I find myself suddendly "back there"...seemingly so clear....and almost 50 years ago...WOW...Fond Memories.

A note from one lucky enough to get this far.  Yes, my heart goes out to those of our classmates that are not with us now and their families.  Like Herb and Philip, class remembrances, the good times, the friendships and the school "goings on" seem to be very fresh in our minds even though alot of water has passed under the bridge.  Staying young in our mind is uplifting.  Probably does not make sense to those reading but............

Shirley was always a happy, engaging contemporary throughout school and we had a lot fun before everyone went their separate ways after grade 13-------we must have been the last of the 13s! We had an extra year to bond!  The Bells had the last farm up Alice Mine road just past Millers and Gidlucks.  I used to ride my old SCP(Special Crap Pile as I was kidded. The other kids had CCM Bikes) up the mine road quite often.  Bruce Avery was a next door neighbour as was Paula Fetzko.  Bruce's dad ran the drug store below my dad's office, Avery Car Pharmacy.  Herb, you must remember the soda fountain, the "suicide" which was a squirt of each flavour which you introduced me to.  Bruce Avery gave me my first ride on a Vespa motorcycle.  He took the neighbour's wife, Sharon Melenka off the road and over the bank next to Paula's house. All survived.  I could write a book on all the great and goofy things we did.  Life seemed to go very slow: got to get driver's licence, go to Porthill, get out of school, stop doing endless homework, exams(arghh!!) and now...............life goes unmercifully fast, exponentially!!

Also fondly remembered and missed are John White(tallest kid in the class), Jack Chernoff, Gail Grant(my first date; grade 7, school dance), Carol Fowley, Gordie Petevello(the Wynndel kid), Bob Barnes(close bud).

To those still breathing, hang in there because this reunion should be a real blast.  Looking forward to seeing the Creston gang, all of you.

Lawrence Colonel (1964)

Ron - I have known the Bell family for many years and not sure if people know that Marion Bell (Shirley's Mom) is 103 years old and lives in Creston. I see all the condolences and I am wondering if you can use your "tecky" knowledge and create a card so classmates can post their condolences.  Then I could take the card to her Mom and share with it also with her husband Dougald.  They would love to see what great things people are saying about Shirley.  I can't believe that this time last year I was enjoying lunch with Shirley and Dougald.  Let me know if you have any suggestions on how to set this up. Thanks

Phillip Armstrong (1964)

I like Lawrence's idea. Would be great if we could send our condolences like that. I think it would be a "feel good" thing in the midst of their sorrow - just to know there are a bunch of us out here who are missing shirley, along with themselves.

Sandra Shunter (Koochin) (1964)

Lawrence's idea is great! Shirley's Celebration of Life is this Sunday(June 22) in Gibsons. Joan (Roper) is going. You could send messages to Dougald through Linda Breault who has contact with Dougald. She and Loretta have been spending time with Shirley's mom, Marion. Lawrence, I am sure it would be helpful if you visited her too. Knowing people care gives strength. I have sent her my memories through Linda.

I understand that there is another Celebration of Life planned for Creston later.

Hi Lawrence!  I concure with your thoughtful suggestion.  Flowers and a card from the class of 64 with our condolences delivered by you, Linda and Loretta would really appreciated by Shirley's mother and it would be fairly simple unless Ron can "tech-up" something that all wishing to send condolences could  express their own sentiments. That could be delivered in lieu of the card.  I would certainly be up for the flowers when plan formulated.

Murray Hendren (1964)

I concur as well, it's a great idea Lawrence.  I must say I am impressed with all the heartfelt comments from fellow class members.  And I agree with Herb, it's hard not to think of people the way they were 50 years ago.  It is a jolt when one of us passes.

Bryan, I remember oh so well the people you mentioned having passed away.  Brian Salvador (school president) is another that passed recently. I intend to take your advice Bryan, and hang in there for the party.

While I am on the forum I wish to thank all of you who are working so hard to make this re-union a success. It already has been a success for me as I have already been able to connect with people I never would have found otherwise.  I was surprised to find one person just blocks from me in Vancouver!

Thanks to you all.

Pat--could you please add my name to the people who will be attending.  I sent Ron a message a while ago but I see I am still not on the list.  Thanks.  Annette

Hi Annette --

You are actually registered on our "Classmate Profiles" list.

The last email I sent, I forgot to copy and paste the current list -- my apologies !!

I have been enjoying the communications amongst all of our group. The Ernie Naccarato name comes up quite often and how he left such a good impression on so many of us.  I see a note "where is Ernie?".  I googled Ernie Naccarato and found no response other than our class reunion references so I googled E. Nacarrato.  A reference came up with a phone number.  Probably all you Crestonites know, but I  found that he is in Creston Manor across from the Overwaitee in Creston.  I phoned and found that it was Ernie and after pushing his mind back 50 years we connected.  He had a stroke from which he is still recovering.  It occurred a few years back.  I told him about the reunion, talked about classmates and mentioned the impact that he had on many of us.  I will be coming up sometime this summer and will make it a point to visit Ernie.  I would like to encourage him to make a showing and would certainly be willing to assist that happening.  If anyone else has any thoughts on this, please let's see what we can do to include Ernie in our celebration.

I too have been wondering about Mr.Naccarato (not ready to call him Ernie). I hope he will be well enough to attend. Many of us remember him fondly. One of the good guys.

Sandra Shunter (Koochin) (1964)

Yes, I agree. "Mr. Naccarato" would probably really enjoy being included in the reunion.

He was very well liked by the Class of 64.

There are probably a few other teachers that remember us and are still living in Creston.

Maybe the reunion Committee could search them out?

There was a PE teacher Bob Fergusson. I think he might still be there. His wife taught PE too.

There must be more.

Several have been asking about Ernie Naccarato.  I see him and talk with him fairly often.  He is getting frailer but then so are many of us.  Both Pauline and Bob Ferguson are still quite active and I see them quite often as well.  Alex Wishlow is still living in the same place.  I think they are the only ones left in Creston.  Would be interesting to see where some of the others ended up.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone in September.  I hope a lot of you can come.
