For many years he was employed as a reporter, sub-editor, managing editor and publisher with daily and weekly newspapers in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba prior to entering the profession of corporate communications with Calgary Power Ltd. With his newspaper affiliations, Herb participated in two royal visits, one with HM Queen Elizabeth, HRH Prince Phillip and HRH Princess Anne; another with Prince Phillip.

Herb is a graduate of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and was class president for Hotel-Restaurant Administration, Class of 1988. He enjoyed more than a decade's affiliation with the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede (rodeo security) and is a member and former president of the Calgary Press Club.

He resides in the city of his birth, Calgary.

School Story

SCHOOL COMMENT: You know, when what was to become the Class of '64 started out in First Grade, one or more Lower Kootenay aboriginal youngsters were with us. And then, all of a sudden, they simply disappeared.....off to the St. Mary's School between Cranbrook and Kimberley.

It is no fault of their own that their path veered from ours. I have asked the committee to consider including our First Nation school mates in the upcoming event.

SCHOOL STORY: When we were in Grade 5, our teacher Mrs. (Nancy) Constable opted to read to us a chapter a day (or maybe it was weekly, memory fails) from Walter Lord's new book, A Night To Remember.

I was enthralled. And could NOT wait for the next installment. So I trundled down to Anderson's Creston Pharmacy and ordered my own hardcover copy...which I still have to this day.

PLUS scores of books (two movies, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER and TITANIC) on the tragic RMS Titanic, senate and board of trade enquiries in the U.S. and Britain, commemorative 100th anniversary coins, Ballard's account and photos....SHELVES of research...plus accounts and lore of other White Star, Cunard, Canadian Pacific, European and U.S. liners.

Want me to ear about four (at least) continuity errors in James Cameron's TITANIC? Just ask.

My point is this: One school teacher's informal 'lesson' so fascinating to one student that a dedicated interest continues to this day.....59 years later.

Now that's education - And THAT'S a teacher! :)
